These couple months, i’ve noticed that Korean singer Hwasa was receiving a lot of hate on social media.
At first, i wasn’t going to say much about it, but the hate became worldwide and intense and it made me curious and i had to say something about it.
I know some media outlets won’t bother talking about it unless something tragic happens but that’s tea for another day.
For the people who don’t know who she is, here is a quick introduction !
Ahn Hye Jin, whose stage name is Hwasa, was born on 23 July 1995 in Jeonju City, South Korea.
She developed a great love for music at a very young age.
Through her talents as a singer, rapper, dancer and lyricist, she was announced as one of the first members of the girls’ group MAMAMOO.
I knew a few Koreans were hating on her because she didn’t « fit in the Korean standards », but now people around the world were also hating on her.
Where did the Hwasa came from ? and what got people mad ?
– MAMA outfit judged too sexy
– Her wearing a Durag
– Mamamoo’s « BlackFace » even if they apologised
– N word when she did the Beyonce cover
– Style of her backup dancers
– Sauna outfit
It came mostly from the internet, people started bullying her for her looks, her personality and shaming her body.
Especially some kpop fans from twitter who decided that it was time to bully her.
I truly think fans are the most hypocrites on Twitter and on the internet, because social media gave y’all way too much power.
People don’t know what is going on behind these doors, but assume anything and everything.
When an idol or artist then commits suicide, y’all act fake woke for a day and pretend that you are touched, you start preaching about it to get a few retweets and then after a week you get back to bullying another celebrity for another reason.
Social media made you forget one thing, these people are humans just like you, maybe it is making you laugh right now, maybe thanks to this bullying you are making new bully friends, maybe you’re getting recognition and the attention you needed. #GrowUp
Hwasa became a target
I have listened to her mini-album and she is talking about it, especially in the song « Maria » that you should check out if you didn’t because she did a great job.
Doesn’t it bother you that you are literally destroying someone’s self esteem and life ?
Hwasa in my opinion doesn’t deserve that, i truly love her music and the least of personality i see from her, she seems so hard working and bright and sweet.
You wanna know what scares people? Success.
When you don’t make moves and you don’t climb up the ladder, everybody loves you because you’re not competition.” – Nicki Minaj
She is clearly winning and achieving this that’s the reason there is so much noise.
Hwasa brings something new to the table of Korean beauty standards.
She has her own style, her own vocal sounds, and she’s owning who she is rather than completely conforming and succumbing to Korean Society’s expectations.
She is beautiful no matter what anyone thinks.
I personally have a lot of respect for her because, she has a lot of pressure and she is a hard worker, i don’t know her but you can tell that she is deep down unproblematic.
Her agency should defend her
Her agency is aware of what’s happening and how it must be affecting her, they should do something about it and focus on her mental health and protect her, her fans will always defend her but they can’t do it alone.
Agency should also hire someone that is familiar with other cultures if they don’t want to do the work, to avoid wardrobe or other mistakes in the future that won’t affect the agency but the artist’s.
We are in the era of the cancel culture and people will cancel you for ANYTHING nowadays.
I’m 100% sure that Hwasa doesn’t wake up in the morning and be like « let me offend a culture today, let me get them upset again so they can hate on me ».
People can be ignorant and not know about a certain culture, but also people are free to embrace and appreciate a culture as well without appropriating.
Are people allowed to be hurt or disappointed ?
Absolutely, you are allowed to feel some type of way and even unstan if you feel like you can’t deal with that person no more.
You’re also allowed to have an opinion.
But don’t jump in conclusions and try to wait and see if there is an actual explanation, sometimes things get exaggerated on social media.
Being hurt doesn’t allow you to bully a person.
Should Hwasa apologise ?
My thing is, she should have as soon as the accusations arrived with the help of her agency.
But honestly will it stop the hate ?
People will always find things to say, they will say that her excuses are not sincere and that she will do it again because she never learns bla-bla.
And actually, MamaMoo as a group apologised for their actions.
Please keep focusing on you, you are worth so much, you have so many people who love you, the love outweighs the hate trust me.
I know the feeling, i can understand that you feel sick and tired of all this hate, so is everyone else.
Numbers don’t lie, you are officially that BITCH, you make great music and you look just fine.
Nothing is wrong with you, something is wrong with them.
These words that they say about you don’t define you.
You are an amazing artist who deserves so much more, trust me with your dedication and passion it’s just a matter of time until the world discovers what you have to offer.
Dear Mamamoo fans,
Please don’t focus on the negativity, focus on the positivty, focus on Hwasa’s growth and expansion as an artist. (same for MAMAMOO)
I know it’s very tempting to defend her especially when people are bashing her and trying to destroy her, but not always, it could be draining for you and her as well.
Spread love and use that hate to stream her music !
I truly hope you enjoyed this article and the message i want to give out is please stop destroying these idols, no one deserves any of this !
I hope i will get a chance to meet and interview Mamamoo or Hwasa one of these days, they are loved and appreciated in Europe, they deserve to meet their fans !
